About this cacao

The town of San Pedro Nonualco is located between high plateaus, near the lake of Ilopango. In the 1550s, the main activity of the tribe of indigenous warriors "Los Nonualcos" was the production of cacao.  Unity is strength.

In this region, 16 producers who individually were facing difficulties to develop, decided to create Cacahuatl cooperative in 2019. This union had immediate results.

The group is led by Roberto Reyes, who, along with the other producers, are also artisans of cacao products such as chocolate, mucilage alcohol, tamales and various beverages. "Cacahuatl" as Roberto explains, means "tree that produces cacao" or "bitter juice".

The cooperative Cacahuatl

Cacahuatl cooperative is composed of 8 women and 8 men who cultivate 15 hectares in a collaborative manner, dividing up the different jobs and making all the farms productive in a system that is unique in the region. The members of the cooperative own about 1 hectare each. Some farms have old cacao trees, 75 years old, while others have very young trees, planted in the last rainy season between May and October 2023.

Most of the members of the group are experts in hybridization, selective harvesting, pruning and polyculture as they combine their cacao trees with fruit trees, whose fruits they market. Since 2009, when the first assistance in the region was provided by NGOs named Alianza Cacao and the government, these producers have been involved in the development of the local cacao crop, which was once destined for the local market and is now internationally oriented.
