Project presentation
This project aims to establish a permanent nursery site to support biodiversity conservation and sustainable coffee production in Ethiopia. It is based on the cultivation of native tree species, which are essential for the coffee ecosystem and sustainable agriculture.
Context
Climate change impacts almost all coffee production methods, in all origins of the world. In Ethiopia, it translates into a warmer and drier climate. Fortunately, coffee trees are mainly grown under shade, but these protective layers must be renewed and preserved. The project to create a native tree nursery strengthens the resilience of coffee trees through adapted agroforestry.
Choice of location
To launch this nursery project, we partnered with a key and field player, Khalid Shifa, a Belco producer and partner for 8 years and owner of a washing station near Badaye Kebele (village). He contributes greatly to the project by covering the land rental costs. We therefore selected the Badaye washing station for the establishment of this new forest tree nursery.
The objectives
- Cultivating 16 native tree species for agroforestry and biodiversity
- Improving the sustainability of coffee systems
- Supporting producers in adopting resilient agricultural practices
- Create a permanent nursery with infrastructure to accommodate workers (toilets, offices, break room).

Distribution of plants to growers in the area
Continued sowing and watering, weeding and pest management, construction of shade structures, transplanting of seedlings into grow bags, distribution of seedlings to growers.

"Most nurseries are short-lived. The aim of this project is to create a permanent nursery with a scalable infrastructure. The nursery could become a training centre for agroforestry farming practices."
