Led by its president Marilu Perez, the cooperative also produces sugarcane and tropical fruits.
Don Roberto Campos oversees the plantation, he explains the richness of the soil, shows the fungi and how the cacao accumulates organic matter and maintains humidity, it is a pleasure to listen to him talk about his work with total control and passion.
These small plots located in the heart of the property give an incomparable freshness compared to the neighboring crops.
For the cooperative, cacao has historically been in third place, since revenues are lower than those obtained with sugarcane and plantain. Specialty cacao can change this order, by restoring landscapes and by enlarging the cacao forests and thus taking space away from sugar cane plantations...
The cooperative has everything it needs: water sources, a suitable climate, an agroforestry system, an impeccable drying station, warehouses in excellent condition and, above all, professional staff with a passion for the product.
The cooperative is called Barra Ciega because the plantation directly overlooks a small tropical bay in the Pacific Ocean with that name.
