About this coffee

Hoysala Farm is located 20 km from the nearest town, Mudigere, in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka state. It was built in 1889 and has been owned by the same family since 1950. Today, Hoysala is run by the 4ᵉ generation.

The coffees are produced under shade with regenerative and environmentally friendly farming practices. We discover a rich diversity on the farm: Arabica, Robusta coffees, fruits & various spices: black pepper, areca nuts, cardamom. There are also over 200 species of animal (birds, insects and reptiles).

After harvesting, the cherries are sorted twice before being mechanically pulped, then washed with recycled water. They are then fermented for 12 hours and washed again. The cherries then dry for 7 to 9 days, stirring them throughout the drying process to ensure they are uniform.

The region Baba Budangiri

Baba Budangiri is a mountain located in the Western Ghats of India in the state of Karnataka. The state of Karnataka is the largest producer of coffee in India ahead of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Legend has it that the story of Baba Budangiri is linked to that of an Indian sage named Baba Budan. Four hundred years ago, during a pilgrimage to Mecca, Baba Budan discovered coffee in Yemen. He smuggled back seven mocha coffee beans from his journey and tied them to his chest, as the Arabs were extremely protective of their coffee industry at that time.

He planted these beans in Chikmagalur, in the Karnataka region. This area thus represents the true genesis of the Indian coffee industry. The Chikmagalur hills are now known as the Baba Budan Hills.
The region produces Arabica coffee at an altitude of between 1000 and 1500m. The appellation covers 15,000 hectares and uses mainly the S795, SL9 and Cauvery varieties.
