Asikana collects organic jenfel (dried pods) from 589 outgrowers. On average, each outgrower has one to two hectares, ranging from one to eight hectares. The farms are part of an organic semi-forest agroecosystem.

We are counting three varieties selected in the 1970s by JARC (744, 74140, 74110) and two locals sende and kuburi. Sende was identified in 1998 and represents the quality profile of Wallagga : honey, spicy aroma and fruity aftertaste.

The cherries are manually harvested, sun-dried at home on African beds, and then delivered to Asikana as jenfel (dried pods).

The jenfel are hulled at Asikana warehouse in Wora Kura kebele, near by the farm of 75 hectares. After hand sorting of the green beans, the coffee is transported to a dry mill in Addis Ababa.

Belco and Asikana work together since 2021 ato promote Western Wallagga coffees.

Zone Nekemte

Nekemte is a town in the Wallaga region of western Ethiopia, which gives its name to this coffee appellation. This region, close to the border with Sudan, is characterised by a rich environment in which coffee has been grown for several centuries. Coffee was first consumed within the family circle, then external demand in the late XIX and early XX centuries played a part in the boom of coffee growing in this region. Known as Nekemte in the Oromo language, and Lekempti in Amharic (the national language of Ethiopia), it is a simple coffee with a fruity, spicy profile. The beans are usually elongated, known as 'long berry'. Endemic coffee varieties, identified by the Jimma Research Centre, are found in this region: Sende, Haru 1, Challa and Manasibu.
