Our Bonga Forest coffee is a forest coffee, grown in the shade of a rich environment. Harvested from local producers, it is then dried by Habtamu Abebe, the owner of the Matapa Michiti station.

The ancient trees provide ideal shade for the slow ripening of the cherries. The fertility and quality of the soil are preserved by sustainable, virtuous peasant farming.

After harvesting, the cherries are dried on raised beds in the sun for 3 weeks before being pulped. During these 3 weeks, the cherries are turned over regularly to ensure even drying and quality.

This Grade 3 coffee (a grade reserved for natural coffees) is the guarantee of a speciality coffee rated above 83 points. What's more, it's grown according to the principles of organic farming!

The farm Matapa Michiti

The Matapa Michiti farm is owned by Habtamu Abebe, who has worked in the coffee and spice trade for many years, working closely with local producers. Before it belonged to Habtamu Abebe, Matapa Michiti was known as Grawa Coffee Plantation. It was a protected biodiversity area, where Habtamu Abebe had been working since 2006. Habtamu Abebe has owned it since 2011, and produces around 800 kilos of green coffee per hectare.

Matapa Michiti represents an opportunity for more than 500 producers to sell their coffee, thanks to the farm's washing and drying station. The coffee, of varieties 74-110 and 74-112, is processed on site, either naturally or washed, and dried on the 70 drying beds at the station. Matapa Michiti employs around 180 people during the harvest period.

As well as coffee, Habtamu produces ginger on half a hectare, tea (1 hectare) and bananas. There are also 45 beehives in the coffee forest, a further element in this virtuous agroforestry system.

A few words about Habtamu Abebe

Habtamu Abebe has owned Matapa Michiti Farm since 2011. Before managing Matapa Michiti, Habtamu worked for a long time in the coffee and spice trade, producing coffee and spices on neighbouring farms.

Habtamu's work doesn't stop at his own farm. Thanks to the washing and drying station set up on his farm, he works with more than 500 producers, to whom he provides all his support: distribution of seeds (between 30 and 45,000 each year), access to credit and advice from agronomic experts.
