Juan Carlos was born in the province of Camacho. He moved to the Yungas in 1992 to work with his father, a coffee grower. In 2004 he bought his own land and planted a very disease-susceptible variety. Rust destroyed his entire crop and he had to start from scratch. He decided to plant more resistant varieties such as Catuai. Juan also planted the Geisha variety to produce coffees with different profiles for the region. Since then, speciality coffee has allowed him to make a decent living and provide for his three children.
