About this coffee

Santa Maria: a women's coffee project with 6 farms

In addition to an organic production and favouring a diversity of shade trees, the Santa Maria farm is entirely managed by women. From production to harvesting and processing, 30 women are involved in all stages of coffee production.

Mildred manages the administrative part and runs the project.

She is accompanied by Alba, called "la cuadrillera", who is in charge of managing all the women in the team and distributing their collection and agricultural work throughout the year.

Luz is a taster and Q-Grader, she is in charge of cupping all the coffees and providing her expertise so that the cups are up to the customers' expectations.

A complex agroforestry farm, certified organic and bird friendly

On his farm, there are 3 layers of shade and no less than 15 different species of trees to protect the coffee trees from direct sunlight and to allow the cherries to ripen more slowly.

- 1st strata of 2 to 4 metres of fruit trees: banana trees, plantains, yellow lemons, limes, clementines, etc.

- 2nd strata of 5 to 8 metres: Guamo and Anaco

- 3rd strata from 10 to 12 metres: endemic trees such as Garbonero and Gualapo

These 3 strata form a protective forest for migratory birds and local birds.

A farm in full expansion

Mildred has several plans for Santa Maria. She wants to acquire more land to increase production and create a women's cooperative to have an even greater impact in the sector and gain autonomy.

The farm Santa Maria

Finca Santa Maria is located at 1700 meters above sea level in the Santander region, near the village of Aratoca, on the hills above the Chicamocha Canyon, which means "silver river" in indigenous language.

Santa Maria consists of 6 farms on 80 hectares where Mildred grows the varieties Castillo, Colombia, Caturra, Typica, Geisha, Wush Wush, Tabi, Moka and Maragogype. The farm is Rainforest, organic, Manos de Mujeres and Bird Friendly certified.

The Santa Maria project is the result of a group of women who have gathered their strength and knowledge around coffee growing. The objective is the production of organic, traceable coffee under shade. The Manos de Mujeres certification implies that the coffee is produced in a preserved environment and in social conditions where women hold leadership positions in the project. The women carry out all the tasks, from agricultural work (planting, harvesting) to the final processing of the coffee. Mildred is the producer, Alba is the cuadrillera, she manages the workforce and Luz is the taster and Q-Grader. Mildred's plan is to expand. She wants to buy more land to increase production and set up a cooperative to increase the influence of women in the coffee industry.
