The farm La Esperanza

Located in the verdant mountains of Guática, Risaralda, La Esperanza is a coffee farm blessed with fertile soils and an ideal climate for coffee cultivation. Its volcanic soils, rich in nutrients, and the mountains draped in lush greenery create the perfect setting for growing coffee. Its owners belong to a generation steeped in tradition, where love for coffee and the countryside has been passed down through the ages. For them, each harvest of ripe beans, each new tree planted, every step taken is a testament to their love for the land, their respect for nature, and their life in the countryside. The road to the farm is a journey through the mountains of the Coffee Axis, winding among green hills and fields brimming with coffee plants and other crops. The journey is an experience that unveils the beauty and richness of this land and its people. The road is adorned not only by its impressive and majestic views teeming with life but also by the inhabitants of this area — tireless workers deeply connected to their land. The coffee farm La Esperanza in Santa Ana, Guática, has a rich history that reflects the region's coffee tradition. Located in the heart of the Coffee Axis, this farm has witnessed over 200 years of dedication to coffee cultivation since its founding in the early 19th century by Secundino Trejos and his wife Margarita.

From its beginnings, Finca La Esperanza stood out as an ideal place for coffee cultivation, and over the decades, the farm has expanded and modernized, incorporating new coffee varieties and more advanced farming techniques. This evolution allowed the farm to adapt to changes in the market, continually improving the quality of its product.

In the 1900s, the farm passed into the hands of Benjamín, Secundino's natural son. Benjamín continued his father's legacy until he reached an advanced age. He then decided to entrust the management of the farm to his three unmarried daughters. With a deep respect for their father's legacy, these women endeavored to maintain the traditional techniques and values he had instilled in them. However, recognizing the need for more vigorous management to ensure the farm's future, they decided to sell it to someone they trusted completely, who could continue their father's legacy.

This is how the farm came into the hands of Gonzaga Blandón and María Alcira Tusarma, one of Benjamín's granddaughters. Together, they have tirelessly worked for over 30 years to keep alive the spirit and passion for coffee that characterized its founder, and to pass on this legacy to their children and grandchildren.

The history of La Esperanza is not only a story of survival but also an inspiration on how traditions can endure and evolve, always keeping alive the love for coffee and the countryside.

After completing his military service, he decided to leave his homeforf better opportunities. Sometimes alone, other times with his siblings, he traveled through the Coffee Axis. In 1976, at 24, in Santa Ana, Guática, he met his wife, with whom he had four children: one son and three daughters. Like every muleteer, he continued traveling and working in many places. In 1992, amidst many
difficulties, his wife's aunts asked for his help to move the family farm forward. He took on this new challenge with great pridee, and they bought the farm with great effort. To this day, he remains the owner.

"Thirty years ago, I began growing coffee at La Esperanza Farm. Throughout this time, I have learned the traditional coffee process firsthand. Practical experience has been my greatest teacher, allowing me to understand and perfect every stage of cultivation, from planting to harvesting and processing. The journey has not been easy, but with dedication and passion, I have managed to develop a coffee farm that produces high-quality beans. Perseverance and commitment to coffee tradition have been essential in overcoming challenges and maintaining excellence in every harvest. Today, with the support of my wife, children, and grandchildren, we continue to cultivate coffee with the same passion and commitment as I did from the very first day I bought the farm".
